The Chinese Ministry of Commerce on Monday officially congratulated Nigerian-American Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her appointment to become the next Director-General of the World Trade Organization.
This was widely expected given that Beijing was among Okonjo-Iweala’s more enthusiastic supporters, particularly during the prolonged standoff with the United States, who backed South Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee for the role.
