China Steps Up COVID-19 Diplomacy in Africa With Hastily Arranged Virtual Leaders Summit

The Chinese government announced on Tuesday that President Xi Jinping will chair what appears to be an impromptu China-Africa leaders summit that to address issues ranging from COVID-19 mitigation, debt relief for African countries and Chinese infrastructure construction projects on the continent that have been adversely impacted by the pandemic.

The summit, according to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, was jointly proposed by South Africa, in its role as the rotating chair of the African Union, and Senegal, who will host the next Forum on China Africa Cooperation summit in Dakar next year.
