The Chinese government issued its first official response on Tuesday to the new U.S. Strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa unveiled by Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Pretoria on Monday.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin was asked by a reporter from the state-run broadcaster CCTV to respond to Blinken’s oft-stated assertion that Washington is not asking African countries to choose between the two superpowers even as the new strategy also accuses Beijing of wanting to “advance its own narrow commercial and geopolitical interests… and weaken U.S. relations with African peoples and governments.”
