Cambodia’s $16 Billion ‘Eco-City’ Poses Social, Ecological Concerns

On 20th of December 2022, a company called Canopy Sands Development kicked off the construction of a $16 billion eco-city in Sihanoukville Province. The eco-city project, Bay of Lights, promises to transform the Ream Bay to a top tourist destination in the world.

Canopy Sands said it is building Bay of Lights to become a self-reliant eco-city. It will contain golf and villa resorts, luxury villas, multi-purpose economic zones, banks, and other facilities equipped with modern technology.
