The U.S. tech behemoth Apple announced it will produce a range of new home appliances in Vietnam. The appliances include indoor security cameras, a hub from which home appliances can be controlled remotely, and a tabletop robot. While the move is being framed in the tech press as the company lessening its exposure to Chinese manufacturing, the details complicate this narrative.

For both the home hub and the tabletop robot, Apple will collaborate with the Chinese company BYD. While it remains China’s electric vehicle leader, BYD does a lot of other tech manufacturing and has become more deeply integrated into Apple’s supply chains.
