China’s President Xi Jinping arrived in Astana, Kazakhstan on Monday for the China-Central Asia Summit, aimed at strengthening Beijing’s ties in the region. The summit will bring Xi together with his counterparts from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

The outreach comes as Russia’s influence is shifting due to the Ukraine war, and as the nearby conflict between Israel and Iran (which shares a border with Turkmenistan) is intensifying. The summit, the second after an inaugural round held in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, in 2023, will run until June 18.
