Building “islands of stability” in Southeast Asia and other states that border China will now be Beijing’s top diplomatic priority to offset the turmoil triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war, says a prominent Chinese international relations scholar.
As China and the United States steadily move towards “direct confrontation,” so-called “neighboring diplomacy” (周边外交) will become much more important, explained Jin Canrong, one of China’s foremost U.S. scholars at Renmin University in Beijing, in an interview with the nationalist online news site Observer (觀察).
