Indonesia has become the latest formal member of the BRICS group. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry announced that the economic powerhouse was unanimously accepted by the group of emerging powers. China’s Foreign Ministry praised the move as “in line with the common interest of BRICS member states and the Global South.”

This is the first time the group expanded its formal membership since 2023. However, a group of “BRICS partner countries” were added in 2024. Indonesia was expected to join in 2023, but its accession was postponed due to elections.
