African Countries Sign on To Global Inquiry Into COVID-19 Origin

All African countries under the banner “The African Group and its Members States” are now part of a group of 110 countries who signed a World Health Organization draft resolution on Monday that calls for an inquiry into the origin of COVID-19.

TAKE AWAY: This is a potentially risky move for African countries given the heightened political sensitivities around this issue for many of the continent’s key partners, particularly the Chinese, U.S., and Australia among others.

If this inquiry concludes (as many in the U.S., Europe, and Australia hope it will) that the COVID-19 outbreak did, in fact, originate in Wuhan, it could put Africa right in the middle of a highly contentious fight, given that China will no doubt reject that finding.
