University of Maryland legal scholar Zhang Jingjing is one of the world’s leading experts on outbound Chinese investment, particularly involving cases that have serious environmental consequences. Over the years, she’s been closely following developments in Guinea where Societe Miniere de Boke (SMB), a Singaporean/Chinese consortium, has a $3 billion contract to develop the country’s mining sector.

In an interview with Ma Tianjie, the Beijing-based Managing Editor of the environmental website China Dialogue, Zhang shared her views on what’s ahead for the venture in Guinea as well her take on the new $2 billion bauxite-for-infrastructure deal between China’s Sinohydrop and the Ghanaian government.
